How to Become a Central Service Technician

central service technician trainingA central service and sterile processing technician is a very important position in the healthcare industry. They provide support to all patient care services within the healthcare facility. 

This professional is the primary employee responsible for infection prevention by sterilizing, decontaminating and cleaning the healthcare facility, especially operating rooms. They are also responsible for making sure the operating rooms are well-stocked with surgical supplies and medical devices, taking inventory of supplies, assembling instruments and more. 

This position requires the individual to be trained and knowledgeable about specific medical devices, principles methods and sterilization processes. 

Central Service Technician Training

A person pursuing central service and sterile processing technician training can choose to work towards a certificate. Although it’s not a requirement for employment, certification is endorsed by the American Society of Hospital Central Supply Professionals by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution and the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management. 

Students are eligible to take the Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician exam if they complete a Central Service/SPD Training Course with a passing grade of 70 percent or higher.
