What is the Demand for Radiographers?
Radiographers, also known as X-ray technicians or radiologic technicians, are trained professionals who use X-ray equipment to take diagnostic images of the human body. They use those images to identify and track medical situations. Not only do radiographers conduct the X-rays, they also help maintain medical records, prepare patients for procedures and communicate information to patients on a daily basis.
An important aspect to consider in the decision to pursue radiographer training is whether there is a positive demand for radiographers. According to the most recent statistics put forth by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for radiographers is on the rise.
In 2010, the United States employed 219,900 radiologic technicians. Between 2010 – 2020, the job outlook for this field is expected to increase by 28% which is faster than the average for all occupations. This will add about 61,000 radiographer jobs by the year 2020. The change is said to be brought about by the aging of the baby boomer generation and the increased demand for diagnostic imaging.
Radiographer Training
To become a radiographer, an individual needs proper radiographer training, licensure and/or certification and knowledge of radiographic procedures, however these requirements vary by state.
To further develop in the radiographer occupation, an individual could use their knowledge and skills to advance to supervisory positions. Another option is to become a radiology practitioner assistant or radiologist assistant, which are two positions that require extra training and certification.
