Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Employment Outlook

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer profession is expected to grow over 27 percent by 2014. In 2004, there were approximately 42,000 people employed in the U.S. as Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.

The increase in Diagnostic Medical Sonographer employment over the next decade is driven by an aging population and the increasing unattractiveness of radiology. Because sonography does not involve radiation, it is more and more often being preferred for diagnostic imaging. Another factor driving the need for more Diagnostic Medical Sonographers is the advances in technology rapidly becoming available.

Much of the employment growth for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers will be working in outpatient services, although hospitals will remain the main employer.
