Health insurers assign codes to every test, diagnosis, prescription, and treatment given by practitioners. Health information management is the field that records these codes, and ensures their accuracy and privacy. Other responsibilities might include:
- Assembling and tracking patient records
- Clarifying information with practitioners or insurance companies
- Gathering data from patients in trials or specific situations, e.g. oncology patients
Health information management requires speed and accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to quickly master new software programs. Discretion and tact are also important, because the contents of patient files are protected by privacy legislation.
Hospitals, private practice clinics, and insurance companies often maintain health information management services on site. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the economy may require up to 35,000 more workers in this field over the next ten years.*
Students who enroll in a health information management-related training program at one of our schools or colleges will have access to industry-current software and instructors with relevant professional experience.
