How to Become an Anesthesia Technician

anesthesia technology trainingAn anesthesia technician assists the anesthesiologist during surgical procedures. This position is responsible for sterilizing, checking equipment, setting up anesthesia tools and medications, patient transport and monitoring the anesthesia equipment during surgery. The anesthesia technician plays a vital role in the successful outcome of every surgery.

Step 1: Anesthesia Technology Training

An entry-level anesthesia technician must obtain either a certificate or associate’s degree related to their field of specialty. A person pursuing this program should enroll in an anesthesia technician or technology degree or certificate program.

Coursework you can expect to encounter while earning an anesthesia technician degree includes anatomy and physiology, anesthesia pharmacology, medical terminology and anesthesia instrumentation. Students are often trained by using mannequins and setting up intubation tubes and anesthesia equipment.

Step 2: Externships

All students enrolled in an anesthesia technician program are required to gain hands-on training and experience by participating in clinical externships. During these externships, students typically work under the supervision of an anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetist. They also gain initial exposure to practicing skills on real patients.

Step 3: Certification

Even though certification is not a requirement, it is highly recommended because it enhances career opportunities in the competitive anesthesia technician field. The American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) offers an anesthesia technician certification exam.

If the steps listed above sound appealing to you, now is the time to consider pursuing anesthesia technology training at a healthcare school near you.
