Massage Therapy Employment Outlook

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the profession of Massage Therapy is expected to grow 18-26 percent by 2014. Demand for Massage Therapists will be strongest among those who complete formal training programs and become certified.

In 2004, there were approximately 97,000 people employed in the U.S. in Massage Therapy. About two-thirds of them were self-employed, and most of them owned their own business.

Medical insurers and health care providers are increasingly recognizing the benefits of Massage Therapy and using it to supplement conventional medical treatment. In addition, like other health care professions, the need for massage therapy in the growing population of people 55 and older is also driving the demand for an increased number of Massage Therapists.
