The Role of a Surgical Technologist
No day in surgery is the same as the one before, and surgery technologists must be able to adapt to the different situations that may arise during surgery. Surgical technologists are allied health professionals and they play an integral role in a team of healthcare workers to provide surgical care to patients.
Some of the healthcare professionals that surgical technologists work closely with include:
- Surgeons
- Surgeon Assistants
- Anesthesiologists
- Nurses
- Radiologic Technicians
On any given day a surgical technologist can be responsible for ensuring safety and efficiency in the operating room. By loading the carts with sterilized instruments, ensuring all team members are organized, and helping prepare the patient for a procedure, the surgical technologist is important in every step of the process.
Also, surgical technologists work closely with anesthesiologists to wake patients up after procedures. It is an exciting field, because every procedure offers a surgical technologist the chance to learn and experience new things. In such a demanding field, it is necessary for surgical technologists to always be on their toes. Being able to react quickly in emergency situations is imperative to ensuring patient safety.
